🌱 So You Want to Work in Climate? Start Here.

We get asked this all the time: “How do I break into the climate space?”
Here’s your not-so-fancy, slightly chaotic, but very real starter pack.

✨ Step 1: Pick your lane.
Climate is huge. Narrow it down. Do you vibe more with policy, renewables, climate justice, food systems, finance, data, tech, or storytelling?

Pick a lane. Climate intersects with:
- Policy & governance
- Renewable energy
- Climate justice
- Finance & carbon markets
- Food systems & agriculture
- Data science & AI
- Tech & innovation
- Storytelling & media

Google it. Deep dive. Start niche.

Use AI or Google for your own research. Type something like: “climate finance career path” or “how to get into carbon markets.” Start niche.
Also check out Work on Climate’s Starter Packs for curated guides across sectors- https://lnkd.in/gVZCxFJX

✨ Step 2: Follow people actually doing the work.
Learn from their experiments, failures, and big wins. (Hint: add folks from underrepresented regions to your list too).

✨ Step 3: Read the right stuff.
Newsletters > 3-month courses.
ImpactShip (hi đź‘‹), Carbon Brief, The Bloom, IISD, and PCDN are goldmines.

👉 Impactship - https://lnkd.in/g5qqTZXi - for changemakers building just climate futures.
👉 Carbon Brief - https://lnkd.in/gqqk8W_y
👉 The Bloom - https://lnkd.in/gFNZjc2X by Jasmine Anouna
👉 HOST Funding Bulletin - https://lnkd.in/gF5kdhRv
👉 International Institute for Sustainable Development’s 13 Newsletters - https://lnkd.in/guEhsftS ( favourite is Energy and ENB Update)
👉 PCDN.Global - https://pcdn.global/ by Craig Zelizer

✨ Step 4: Skim policy docs.
Yeah, they’re not beach reads. But IPCC reports, UNFCCC explainers, and Global Stocktake summaries? They’ll give you the real picture.

✨ Step 5: Remember, climate is everywhere.
From fashion to fintech to food. Whatever your skillset, there’s space for you.

And most importantly → rest. đźŚ»
This is a marathon of marathons. You don’t need to fix everything to make an impact. Pick your lane. Stay curious. Keep moving.

THE JARGON DECODER
Decoding complex policy terms into plain English so you can focus on making an impact.

📌 Term: Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) â†’

What it actually means:
Think of CBAM as a "carbon tax at the border." The EU (and potentially others) will start charging imports like steel, cement, or fertilizer based on how much carbon was emitted to produce them. If your country has weaker climate rules, your goods could get slapped with extra fees when entering stricter markets.

Why it matters:
This shifts the cost of pollution from local industries to global trade. For developing countries, it could mean tougher export challenges. For climate innovators, it’s a chance to make low-carbon solutions more competitive worldwide.

Quick tip:
If you work in climate policy, trade, or industry-keep an eye on CBAM. It’s not just about Europe; it’s setting the tone for how climate accountability may shape global markets.
