THE JARGON DECODER
Decoding complex policy terms into plain English so you can focus on making an impact.
📌 Term: Blended Finance →
What it actually means:
A funding strategy where public or philanthropic money is used to reduce risk so private investors feel comfortable putting their money into climate or development projects.
In simple terms: governments or foundations go first, absorb some of the risk, and make it safer for banks and investors to follow.
Why it matters:
Blended finance is often promoted as the solution to the climate finance gap. But if not structured equitably, it can prioritize investor returns over community needs.
Equity lens:
The real question isn’t whether private capital shows up. It’s who benefits when it does and who carries the risk if it doesn’t.
