🚨 Real Talk: What No One Tells You About Breaking Into Climate Policy & Global Advocacy
Featured Reflection by the ImpactShip Team

You’re doing all the right things.
You attend the events.
You stay up-to-date.
You care deeply.

But still, it can feel like the real work, the rooms where decisions are made is happening somewhere else.

Here’s the truth: this space doesn’t just reward hard work.
It runs on a set of quiet rules no one puts in the handbook.

Here are a few we’ve learned the hard way:

1. Your voice matters more than your title.
Don’t wait to be the “Director of Policy” to say something smart. Some of the most powerful interventions come from people who aren’t even on the panel—but ask the best question from the floor.

2. Most opportunities don’t come from applications. They come from showing up.
Some of our biggest breaks started with a DM, a follow-up email, or volunteering at the right event. Start contributing before anyone hands you a badge.

3. Visibility isn’t self-promotion - it’s public work.
Doing good work quietly is noble. But if no one sees it, no one can support it, fund it, or scale it. Talk about your work. Share your lessons. Someone’s waiting to learn from it.

4. Adaptability wins in this space.
The policies will shift. The funding will disappear. New buzzwords will trend. Your edge is being able to read the moment, recalibrate, and keep going.

5. Stop waiting for permission.
Don’t wait for someone to invite you. Start the conversation. Build the project. Create the toolkit. The people shaping the future are already doing it—before anyone tells them they’re “qualified.”

💡Looking for your starting points? Here’s what’s open now:

You don’t need to wait to make change.
You just need to start…..

THE JARGON DECODER
Decoding complex policy terms into plain English so you can focus on making an impact.

📌 Term: Additionality→ (pops up a lot in climate finance, carbon markets, and development.)
What it actually means-
The idea that a project or investment should result in additional benefits that wouldn’t have happened without that specific support.
In climate terms, for example, a carbon offset is only “valid” if the emission reduction it claims would not have happened without the funding from that offset.

Why it matters:

It’s the difference between funding something impactful… and funding something that would’ve happened anyway. In climate finance, lack of additionality leads to greenwashing. In development, it wastes resources. Measuring additionality helps ensure real-world outcomes, not just feel-good headlines.

Real-world example:
If a reforestation project is already government-funded and fully operational, a private donor coming in afterward doesn’t make a new impact. But if that donor funds new tree-planting in an unprotected region, that’s additional.
