🌍 Cracking Your First United Nations Role: What Nobody Tells You
Working for the United Nations often feels like a dream reserved for the “chosen few.” No backdoor entries. No insider references. Just an application through the official portal, like thousands of others.
UN jobs and internships can attract 500–1000 applications per role, and the process is long. Multiple screening stages, written tests, panel interviews, reference checks, and then the endless waiting.
This isn’t a universal formula, but rather few tips from our experience of landing positions at UN agencies.
PART 1: The Application Stage
Before you even click “apply,” here are six things you must know:
1. Match the role criteria exactly.
When the job post says “minimum one year of experience”, they mean a full 12 months of verified work. Even if you’re short by a single month, your application won’t move forward. Recruiters manually check and count your experience.
2. Triple-check your application accuracy.
Dates, designations, degrees, job titles, everything should match your official documents. Even minor inconsistencies can be flagged.
3. Know the financial terms.
Most internships are unpaid, but don’t let finances stop you if you can afford to go unpaid, the experience itself is invaluable.
4. Prepare your references.
The UN’s reference check process is long (15–30 minutes of detailed forms). Make sure your referees are aligned, available, and willing to put in that effort.
5. Write a cover letter that tells your story.
Generic, copy-paste applications don’t stand out. Use the cover letter to explain why you, your journey, motivation, and what you hope to contribute and learn.
6. Learn to embrace rejection.
Sometimes roles are filled internally, or candidates with stronger referrals make the cut. Other times, the position disappears altogether. It’s rarely about your competence. Don’t feel disappointed, move on quickly to the next opportunity.

THE JARGON DECODER
Decoding complex policy terms into plain English so you can focus on making an impact.
📌 Term: Additionality →
What it actually means:
In climate finance and carbon markets, additionality asks one question: “Would this project have happened without the funding or carbon credits?” If the answer is yes, it’s not additional. For example: building a wind farm that was already profitable without carbon credit revenue = not additional.
Why it matters:
If credits or climate finance go to projects that would’ve happened anyway, they don’t create new climate benefits. That means money is wasted, emissions aren’t actually reduced, and carbon markets risk becoming greenwashing machines.
Quick tip:
When you see a project claiming carbon credits or climate funding, ask:
Is it truly additional, or would it have happened anyway?
What’s the proof?
Spotting additionality (or the lack of it) can tell you if climate finance is real impact—or just paperwork.
