THE JARGON DECODER
Decoding complex policy terms into plain English so you can focus on making an impact.
📌 Term: Climate Colonialism →
What it actually means:
When rich countries or corporations push climate policies or projects that benefit them, while shifting the costs, land use, or burdens onto poorer nations. Think: using African land for carbon offsets or deciding global climate targets without including the people most affected.
Why it matters:
It’s not just a history lesson - it’s happening right now. Many Global South nations are fighting for a seat at the table, fair finance, and the right to define their own climate futures. Recognizing climate colonialism means seeing how power still shapes who gets funded, who gets blamed, and who gets left out.
Quick tip:
If you work in policy, research, or funding, ask: Who benefits, and who bears the cost? True climate justice starts when climate action is led - not dictated by those on the frontlines.
