THE JARGON DECODER
Decoding complex policy terms into plain English so you can focus on making an impact.

📌 Term: Climate Mitigation vs. Adaptation - What’s the Difference?

What it actually means:
Think of mitigation as putting out the fire - cutting greenhouse gases to stop things from getting worse. Adaptation, on the other hand, is learning to live with the heat - building flood barriers, drought-proofing farms, or designing heat-resilient cities.

Why it matters:
Most climate funding today still goes to mitigation, but for millions already living with climate impacts, adaptation is survival. Knowing the difference helps you find the right funding streams and design projects that actually meet people where they are.

Quick tip:
When you’re writing proposals or pitching impact work, use both terms -funders love to see projects that cut emissions (mitigation) and build resilience (adaptation). That’s the sweet spot.
