THE JARGON DECODER
Decoding complex policy terms into plain English so you can focus on making an impact.
📌 Term: Loss and Damage →
What it actually means:
Loss and Damage refers to the unavoidable consequences of climate change that can't be prevented through mitigation (cutting emissions) or adaptation (adjusting to impacts). Think: destroyed homes from rising seas, lost crops due to droughts, or cultural heritage sites wiped out by disasters.
Why it matters:
This is one of the most urgent (and contested) areas of global climate finance. At COP27, countries agreed to establish a Loss and Damage Fund to support vulnerable nations. At COP30, eyes will be on how this fund is governed, who pays, and how quickly funds reach frontline communities. If you're working on climate justice, this is the space to watch.
